Artist Reaches Classrooms Around the World with Online Lesson Plans

August 15th, 2017

Megan Coyle, a collage artist and illustrator from the Washington, DC area, has reached classes around the world with her artwork. Back when she was in college, she put together a portfolio website for her art by teaching herself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. After she graduated in 2008, it was common for students and teachers to find her work online and contact her about her collage technique.

Coyle realized she could make things easier for these educators and students by creating an education section for her website. She created several free online lesson plans available for teachers who teach grades K – 12. Coyle’s resources help teach art fundamentals, as well as how to make “painting with paper” collages. They include several online readings with art prompts to complete in class, with topics ranging from self portraiture to animal art inspired by the zoo.

Since launching the educational section of her site, Coyle has heard from numerous classrooms around the world, ranging from schools around the U.S., to countries like New Zealand, Venezuela, and Italy. Students and teachers have often shared images of student art inspired by Coyle’s collages. You can find images of the student work at student-work/. Coyle is excited that her work is continuing to reach students around the country and world.
